The Department:
Our teaching staff has an extensive range of teaching and research interests in English literatures and their cultural context. As well as offering regular ‘Office Hours’ for consultation, staff try, as much as they possibly can, to operate an ‘Open Door’ policy. The academic members of the staff in the unit are experienced and highly qualified and adopt a distinctive approach of teaching which makes it easy for our students to understand the concepts with ease.
The Students:
As well as those from the UK, Africa and Asia, we welcome students from Europe, USA, South America, Russia and elsewhere; the atmosphere is therefore quite cosmopolitan. We have an excellent record for admitting and teaching students, who appreciate the personal approach, find the diversity of courses stimulating and are offered support from both the Department and the College, to meet their specific needs. Our English language programme presence is expanding rapidly.
The Courses:
Our courses have been so designed as to combine a range of teaching methods, lectures with seminars and workshops and a range of assessments-continuous assessment, examination and dissertations. The English for International Students Unit provides English language support to international students. We offer lunchtime classes, individual appointments, and writing workshops. The Writing Programme is a college programme of composition courses designed to help students enter the world of intellectual disciplines and discourses. We run a wide range of other courses in Academic, Business, and General English.
Teaching Method:
Tutorial lessons are completely individualized allowing you and the teacher to focus on your personal language requirements.
Seminars are interactive teacher-led sessions with 6-10 students of differing Levels
(Reflecting the real world), which focus on speaking skills, business skills (meetings, presentations etc), pronunciation, study skills and current affairs.
Consolidation sessions are supervised by a staff member. They allow you to consolidate work covered in your lessons and also use various media to focus on e-learning opportunities.
